Tenerife – Itinerary For A Week

With its year-round sunshine and fantastic coastline, there is so much to add to a Tenerife itinerary. Day One: Mount Teide National Park

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is both a volcano and Spain’s highest mountain and has several hiking routes through its volcanic landscapes and pine forests. If hiking’s not for you, there’s always a cable car. Stargazers should visit the Teide Observatory, from where most constellations can be seen.

Day Two: Visit Tenerife’s Cultural Capital San Cristobal La Laguna

Do add this 15th century former capital to your Tenerife itinerary, as it boasts many historic attractions, including the Cathedral, the Plaza del Cristo market, churches and colourful houses. Science buffs will enjoy the Museum of Science and the Cosmos, which has interactive displays and a planetarium.

Day Three: Head For The Hills

In Tenerife, things to do include hiking, either through the Laurisilva forest in the Anaga Rural Park or between Masca village and the rocky beach below, from where water taxis go to Los Gigantes.

Day Four: Visit Puerto De La Cruz

This seafaring town has a fishing harbour, a palm-fringed promenade and a museum of contemporary art, as well as Loro Parque, Tenerife’s most popular wildlife park, and the Jardin Botanico, with subtropical and tropical flora. Afterwards, take a refreshing dip in the artificial lake complex of Lago Martiánez.

Day Five: A Day At The Seaside 

While in Tenerife, things to do should include a day at sea, so head for Los Gigantes, famous for its giant cliff formations, where conditions are excellent for snorkelling, diving and kayaking. Take a three-hour dolphin and whale-watching trip from Los Gigantes Marina, some tours include a buffet lunch. You may also have time to visit some of the best beaches in Tenerife.

Day Six: Visit The Capital, Santa Cruz

Admire the modern architecture of Tenerife’s cosmopolitan capital, by visiting the Tenerife Space of Arts and the Tenerife Auditorium, reminiscent of Sydney’s Opera House, where you can enjoy lunch on its terrace restaurant, with fantastic views.

The Museum of Nature and Man contains native tools and carvings, and a particular highlight at the Military Museum is the El Tigre cannon, which claimed Admiral Horatio Nelson’s arm.

End the day relaxing on the Playa de las Teresitas beach, with its golden Saharan sands.

Day Seven: Take The Family To A Theme Park

Worth adding to your Tenerife itinerary are Siam Park tickets. Siam Park theme park boasts free-fall water slides, rides and a Thai floating market, and Aqualand has river rapids, wave pools and a dolphinarium. The Monkey Park breeding centre for endangered primates also houses parrots, lemurs and turtles. Jungle Park has a variety of animals, from big cats to primates, as well as lagoons, waterfalls and suspension bridges.
