Sri Lanka has been on our bucket list since 2017, but we haven’t had the chance to actually get there yet. There are plenty of reasons why this island in the Indian Ocean is a must-visit destination that everyone should have on their bucket list! There’s no better time to head to Sri Lanka, and these are the six best reasons to go this year,
The Beautiful Beaches
Pretty much every list of reasons to visit Sri Lanka starts with the beaches, and it’s not hard to see why. This little island has some of the most stunning beaches on the planet, that always seem so empty, even during peak tourist season. Hiriketiya on the south coast, Bentota on the west coast, and Arugam Bay on the east coast are all worth a visit.
The People And Culture
Sri Lanka is such a diverse country, packed full of different people and cultures. You will find residents from all walks of life here, including Sinhalese and Tamils, who originate from the subcontinent of India. This country is a real melting pot of different cultures and heritages, which means you’ll be welcomed with open arms as soon as you step foot on the island.
There are nearly 6,000 wild elephants roaming about Sri Lanka, along with the biggest concentration of leopards in the world. If you are feeling generous, you can volunteer at one of the many animal sanctuaries in Sri Lanka, which will enable you to get up close and personal with these majestic beasts. If you prefer your marine life, Sri Lanka is the perfect place to swim with dolphins or whale watch, too.
The Unexplored North
According to Ben Groundwater, who has a blog called ‘The One Thing’ over on 1Cover, there is something you really should do when you’re in Sri Lanka – visit the unexplored north. While this part of the island used to be a warzone, it’s now one of the most untouched parts of the island. This means you can venture into lands that most tourists don’t bother with, tasting some delicious Tamil-influenced food while you’re there.
The Full Moon Parties
If the phrase ‘full moon party’ makes you think of student gap years in Thailand, Sri Lanka will surely change your mind. This little island is home to plenty of festivals throughout the year, but the Poya festivals are some of the best. These parties are far calmer and gentle than what you’d expect to find in Thailand, so they’re well worth a visit if you get the chance.
Finally, Sri Lanka is quickly growing as a popular tourist destination, which means the local businesses are too. There are some genuinely stunning hotels in Sri Lanka that cater for all budgets and tastes. Whether you want a luxurious beach hut, complete with infinity pool, or want to camp under the stars in the rainforest, this island will have something perfect for you.
There are countless reasons to visit Sri Lanka, although these are some of the best. Are you going to take the plunge and explore this little island in 2019? Let us know in the comments.
