How To Save Money On Your Next Cruise – A Complete Guide

Cruise Money Tips

Cruises are a fantastic way to explore new destinations, enjoy all-inclusive amenities, and relax on the open sea. However, costs can quickly add up if you’re not careful. From the initial booking to onboard expenses, there are plenty of ways to save without sacrificing your experience. Here are our top tips to help you cruise on a budget.

1. Book At The Right Time

Timing is everything when booking a cruise. Consider these strategies:

Plan ahead or wait for last-minute deals: Booking when cruises are released often gets you early-bird discounts and perks. Alternatively, if you’re flexible, last-minute bookings can offer incredible savings – usually around 2 month before when the balance has to be paid.

Sail during off-peak seasons: Cruises during shoulder seasons (e.g., late spring or autumn) are typically cheaper. Avoid bank holidays, for example Christmas and Easter, and school holidays to grab better deals.

2. Choose The Right Cabin
Room On board

While a balcony suite may seem tempting, an interior cabin can save you hundreds. Think about how much time you’ll actually spend in your room. If you plan to explore the ship and ports most of the day, an interior or ocean-view room can offer great value. Also look at cabins with obstructed views so you still get a partial view and some light, these are cheaper team a normal ocean view.

3. Take Advantage Of Discounts

It’s worth signing up to loyalty programes. If you’ve cruised before, check for repeat-customer discounts. Cruise lines often reward loyalty with perks or reduced rates.

If you are cruising in a group then you can often get a free cabin if there are a number of you. Worth checking with the travel agent or cruise line.

Reward scheme: Some travel credit cards in the US offer discounts and if you work in the health service in the UK and have a Blue Light Card you may get cruise discounts. It’s often worth enquiring.

4. Be Smart About Excursions

Shore excursions organised by the cruise line can be expensive. Instead book independently: Research local tour operators for similar experiences at a fraction of the cost. Have a look on sites such as Get your Guide, Viator or Tripadvisor. Or book with the tour operator directly.

Explore on your own: Many ports are easy to navigate on foot or via local transportation, allowing you to save and enjoy a more authentic experience.

5. Watch For Hidden Costs

Cruises are often marketed as “all-inclusive,” but extras can add up. Here’s how to cut costs:

Skip the drink package: If you’re not a heavy drinker, purchasing beverages individually may be cheaper. Consider bringing your own wine or soda if allowed. Usually both of you have to have the drinks package in a cabin and if one of you doesn’t drink it’s not worth it.

Limit speciality dining: Stick to complimentary restaurants instead of splurging on speciality options every night.

BYO essentials: Items like sunscreen, over-the-counter medicine, or toiletries can be overpriced onboard. Pack these ahead of time.

6. Use Onboard Credits Wisely

Onboard credits are like free money you can spend during the cruise. Use them strategically for:

Spa treatments or specialty dining you wouldn’t usually splurge on.

Excursions or souvenirs from onboard shops.

Avoid using credits for items that can be purchased more affordably elsewhere, like bottled water or snacks.

7. Go For Free Entertainment
Entertainment

Cruise ships are packed with free activities, so take part! Attend live shows, trivia nights, and movies under the stars, participate in fitness classes or dance lessons (many are complimentary). Alternatively enjoy poolside lounging, water slides, or onboard games, there are many activities on board a ship.

Make the most of these offerings to avoid spending extra on entertainment.

8. Stay Connected Without Breaking The Bank

Internet packages on cruises are notoriously pricey. If you can, unplug and enjoy the digital detox. If you need connectivity: wait until you’re in port to use free Wi-Fi at local cafes or hotspots.

Althernatively,  split the cost of a Wi-Fi package with your travel companions, or just buy the odd day here and there.

9. Research Alternative Ports And Itineraries
Ports

Popular destinations like the Caribbean and the Mediterranean can be pricey. Look for itineraries to less-visited regions like Alaska in shoulder season or smaller islands in the Pacific. You’ll enjoy unique experiences often at a lower cost.

10. Set A Budget And Stick To It

Before you board, decide how much you will spend on extras. Use cash or a preloaded card for excursions, souvenirs, and drinks to avoid overspending. You can add cash to your cruise card normally at reception.

Cruise Smart, Cruise Happy

Cruising doesn’t have to break the bank. With some planning, savvy decision-making, and a focus on what truly matters, you can have a memorable vacation while staying within budget. Bon voyage!
