For years we had avoided Las Vegas thinking it tacky and far from glamorous. After taking the plunge and visiting Vegas a few years ago it has now become one of our favourite destinations. We can’t wait until the Autumn for our fourth visit.
Yes it is tacky and tasteless but brilliantly tacky and fantastically tasteless. You just have to embrace it and enjoy Las Vegas in all it’s glitz and glory.
The service is excellent, the hotel rooms are big, luxurious and are superb value, also the number of outstanding restaurants and stylish bars are growing every year.
Here is a whimsical selection of our Las Vegas favourites.
Best Place To Stay
The Venetian, despite it’s size, excellent service from all staff. Helpful valet, easy check-in and polite and efficient porters. Great location and utterly over the top, wonderfully Las Vegas.
Mandarin Bar at the Mandarin Oriental, Mid Strip. Stylish and romantic with friendly professional staff, exactly what you would expect from a Mandarin Oriental. Good views over the strip but you need to book to guarantee a window seat.
Best Place To Have Coffee Next To Somebody A Bit Strange
Starbucks on Fremont Street, a good place to people watch, just don’t make too much eye contact.
Best Place To Marry Your Vegas Wife
Graceland Wedding Chapel, where could be better to marry your new Vegas wife. Getting married by an Elvis impersonator to a girl you met earlier that night, ticks all the boxes.
Best Place For Dinner
Le Cirque at the Bellagio, first class French cuisine without the attitude. A whimsically colourful dining room with views over the Bellagio fountains. Attentive service, great wines and unusually for a French restaurant, there is a selection of vegetarian options.
Best Place To Be Besieged By Flyers For Girls
All along the strip but especially at some junctions there hordes of little old men and women giving out flyers for Girls, Girls, Girls direct to your room. It doesn’t matter who you are with, wife, kids or granny you’ll get these flyers thrust in your face.
Don’t ignore them, just collect enough for a game of Top Trumps back in the hotel bar.
Helicopter tour over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam and of course the Grand Canyon. A great way to see the natural wonder that is the Grand Canyon and to appreciate it’s size. Look out for the white bath tub ring around the edge of Lake Mead which highlights the serious lack of water.
Most of the tours offer hotel limo pick.
So if you have never been to Las Vegas make sure to put it on your list. There are so many brilliant things to see and do. You may love it like us or experience a lost weekend of ‘Fear and Loathing‘, but you must give it a go.
If you have already been to Vegas or if you are a regular visitor then share your experiences, tips or curious story.
