Driving The TOP GEAR Road In South Wales

The A4069, commonly known as the Black Mountain Pass, is a breathtaking road that winds its way through the stunning landscape of the Black Mountain Range in Wales.

The section of the A4069 from from Brynamman to Llangadog is also known as the Top Gear road after being featured on a drive in 2011. The road rises to 1600 feet before descending back down the valley to the other side.

The area is located in the western side of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The park is now known by its Welsh name, Bannau Brycheiniog, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty.

As you drive this road, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of rolling hills, dramatic valleys, and majestic mountains. The road itself is a marvel of engineering, with hairpin bends, steep inclines, and narrow stretches that add an element of excitement and challenge to the drive. At the top of the pass, you will find Herbert’s Quarry which is worth a stop. It’s part of the Mynydd Du SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and the Black Mountain and Mynydd Myddfai Registered Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest in Wales.

Just be careful of the speed cameras and the maximum speed in the area is only 40 mph.
