The capital city of the Tuscan region, Florence, is one of the most popular. They get around 16 million visitors, per year. If you want to know why people love this relatively small city so much, you just need to read on. Below, is our round-up of the highlights.

The Teatro Della Pergola

The first Florence opera house opened its doors in the mid-1600s. But, it was not until 1718 that this theatre was used for operas. Today, it is still a major opera venue and it is also a great place to visit during the day. 

There are tours available that take you into every nook and cranny of this building. Providing you with a chance to learn about its history and get a glimpse behind the scenes. The tour also covers much of the early history of Florence. So, it is quite a good starting point for your visit to the city.

This art gallery is one of the oldest and most famous in the Western world. It is full of Renaissance works of art, including works by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Although, if you can, book in advance, the queues can be horrendous, especially during peak season.

Eat At San Lorenzo Market

One of the nicest things about Italy is the food. There is no doubt that the Italians have a way of turning just a handful of basic ingredients into something really special. If you are a bit of a foodie, head to the San Lorenzo market. 

It is the largest and oldest market in the city. On the lower floor, you can shop for food for a picnic. If you are enjoying a self-catering break the market is a great place to shop for fresh ingredients. Then head up to the top floor to enjoy a drink and something to eat in one of the many bars, cafes and restaurants that are located there.

Climb The Duomo

If you want to get a panoramic view of the city, climb the 463 steps to the top of Brunelleschi’s Cupola dome. While you are up there, take a closer look at the magnificent Last Judgement fresco that adorns the underside of the dome.

Then come down and take a look around the Basilica de Santa Maria del Fiore, to get your breath back. This beautiful cathedral has an astonishing marble façade, which was built in 1436. 

Admire Giotto’s Campanile

Nearby, is Giotto’s Campanile. It is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture that has been extremely well preserved. The tower is covered in beautifully decorated panels and artwork.
