Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced sailor you can always find a beautiful destination suitable for your ability.
When you sail these stunning waters you get to escape the crowds and visit the quiet beaches and bays, many of which are only accessible by sea. Whether you’re a couple or a family, chartering a private sailing yacht gives you an exclusive experience that is hard to equal on land.
So where are the best sailing destinations in Europe? We know this is can be very subjective but here are some of the favourites each with something unique to offer.
Ionian Islands, Greece
The Ionian Islands lie on the western coast of Greece and being Greece, they are steeped in history and legend. The seven islands include some familiar summer holiday destinations such as Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos.
The islands were part of the Republic of Venice for over 400 years which gives the region a distinct identity with many Italian influences. This can be seen in the architecture especially in towns such as Corfu.
The North Ionian Islands of Corfu and Paxos can be great for beginners. Picturesque harbours and clear waters, it is a relatively sheltered area with perfect afternoon sea breezes.
Balearic Islands, Spain
The popular summer holiday destination of the Balearic Islands has something to offer for everyone. From the famous clubs of Ibiza holidays and the stylish city of Palma de Mallorca. To the relaxed island of Menorca and the sparkling crystalline waters of Formentera, the smallest of the Balearic Islands.
The relatively calm waters of the islands and the mild climate make perfect conditions for novices who want to sail on their own for the first time.
Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
With a myriad of islands and hundreds of secluded inlets Croatia’s Dalmatian coast is another perfect sailing destination in the Adriatic. When you visit, it will be clear to see why it has become one of Europe’s leading sailing destinations.
The area is also suitable for all levels of sailing ability with very manageable wind conditions.
There are a wide selection of islands and towns to visit depending on your interests. From the trendy, celebrity’s favourite of Hvar to the contrasting Lastovo, one of the most remote Dalmatian islands. Not forgetting the historic cities of Split and Dubrovnik. The old city of Split is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Dubrovnik is known as the pearl of the Adriatic and of course, a favourite with the Game of Thrones Fans!
Sicily, Italy
Lying just off the southern tip of Italy, historic Sicily is the largest of the Mediterranean islands. It is the home to ancient towns and cities such as Syracuse where the mathematician Archimedes (Mr “Eureka!) lived over 2000 ago.
The active Mount Etna volcano looms in the distance over the ancient coastal city of Catania. The island’s second-biggest city and a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Not far off the north coast of Sicily are the dramatic volcanic Aeolian Islands. These seven beautiful islands are only about 15NM from Sicily and just over 30NM west of mainland Italy.
Malta
Malta’s location in the centre of the Mediterranean has made this small island strategically important for thousands of years. Most recently during World War II where its resilience earned the whole island the George Cross. Malta, especially the capital Valletta can be described as a living museum.
The Maltese archipelago consists of 3 islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino which is largely uninhabited. It is often overlooked as a sailing destination but its miles of unspoiled coastline and secluded anchorages make Malta definitely worth another look.
Malta is only 52 nautical miles from Sicily so for the more confident sailors, there’s also the opportunity to combine it with a Sicily/Italian trip.
