Atlantic City – Walking The Famous Boardwalk

A “Brit” in Atlantic City! I take a walk along the famous boardwalk. Spanning over four miles along the Jersey Shore, this legendary destination symbolises classic American seaside entertainment.

Although it may be a bit run down, for me, the Atlantic City boardwalk still retains an atmosphere that captures the spirit of old-time fun. This affection may be due to the fact I live in a seaside town which has experienced better days.

A Stroll Through History

Walking along the Atlantic City Boardwalk is like stepping back in time. Established in 1870, it holds the distinction of being the first boardwalk in the United States. As you wander, you’ll encounter remnants of its rich history, from retro storefronts (and those well past their prime) to iconic landmarks.

The Boardwalk Hall, a magnificent 1920s building, showcases stunning architecture and serves as a venue for events. Another must-visit spot is the Steel Pier, which has been an Atlantic City institution since 1898, offering rides, carnival games, and great views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Hard Rock Hotel Atlantic City

Apart from some of those ‘interesting‘ people you’ll encounter, there is an array of attractions, shops and dining options along the boardwalk. One of the main attractions are the numerous casinos. Try your luck at the slot machines or poker, but if gambling is not your thing, try one of their bars or celebrity chef restaurants. Gordon Ramsay does get everywhere and the Americans seem to love him!

Previously, I stayed in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino which was originally Donald Trump’s defunct Taj Mahal casino.

If you don’t want to walk the boardwalk there is an electric tram service which runs from the Ocean Casino down to the Tropicana. Also, there are the classic boardwalk rolling chairs which date from the 1900s. These wicker chairs are pushed by attendants. The rate is charged by the block or amount of time travelled and as it’s America, don’t forget the tip.

The Beaches

The weather was a bit too cold for a day at the beach during my visit but in the summer, the Atlantic City Boardwalk is an ideal starting point for a day at the beach. With its pristine sandy shores, it offers a perfect backdrop for sunbathing or simply taking a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge. The Atlantic surf looked pretty good as well.

Atlantic City Beaches

I understand that Atlantic City may not be for everyone but I definitely had an affinity with the place. The boardwalk itself is an iconic American destination. With its rich history, diverse entertainment, casinos, and stunning ocean views, it continues to attract millions of visitors each year. Despite its many ups and downs.
