We have to admit that we’ve only recently discovered the charm of the Greek island of Crete. We just wished we had visited sooner. Whether you want sun and beaches, culture, or both, Greece’s largest island has something to offer you.
So Where To Stay?
There are a few ‘party spots’ like Malia but generally, Crete is a very family and couples orientated island with an increasing number of luxurious properties and resorts. Although, most resorts are still relaxed with an abundance of excellent bars and restaurants. Our wildest nights were sitting in a taverna while watching the sunset over the harbour.
Agios Nikolaos
We’ve previously stayed in Agios Nikolaos, 50 minutes east of the island’s capital Heraklion. Agios Nikolaos overlooks Crete’s Mirabello Bay and is a popular resort with the British. Although popular, it still retains a small-town feel.
Elounda
Less than 20 minutes north of Agios Nikolaos is Elounda. This area overlooks some beautiful beaches and the crystal blue waters of the bay. Elounda is quieter and more ‘low key’ than some of the other resorts on the island, it is also home to some of the most exclusive villas and the best luxury hotels Crete has to offer.
Elounda is a perfect resort for couples who want a luxury break which is still only a short flight from the UK. However, there are several deluxe villas with private pools in the area, ideal for families wanting space.
So if you choose to stay on the northeastern coast of Crete, in our opinion, you can’t go wrong with Agios Nikolaos or neighbouring Elounda.
Travelling west from the airport along the coast, you reach the resorts of Rethymnon and Chania.
Rethymnon
Rethymnon is a pretty Venetian harbour town rich in history and culture. The Venetian Republic occupied Crete for nearly 400 years. Eventually, the Venetians were pushed out of the island by the Ottoman Empire. This is why you can find an eclectic mix of Ottoman mosques, fortress and cobblestone streets lined with Venetian buildings.
As well as the history and culture of the town, the area has some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. If you want to relax away from the more popular beaches you can still find some quiet, secluded coves.
Overall, the lively town centre and the range of activities make Rethymnon great for families and couples alike.
Chania
The historic town of Chania lies on the northwestern coast of Crete. In our opinion, it is one of the most beautiful towns in Crete. The old town is centred around the picturesque Venetian port which dates from the 1300s.
Chania is just over an hour’s drive west of Rethymnon. Like Rethymnon, as you walk through the narrow, labyrinthine streets in the heart of Chania. You’ll encounter an eclectic mix of Cretan, Venetian and Ottoman architectural styles.
Chania is a 2 hours drive from Heraklion airport. However, there are direct flights available from the UK to Chania. The airport is only 20 minutes from the old town.
Explore The Island
As well as the beaches and the coastal resorts, it is worth renting a car and exploring the interior of the island. Rugged mountains dotted with whitewashed houses and traditional windmills. We visited the village of Kritsa, one of the oldest in Crete. It’s only a short drive from the coast and the resorts of Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. It’s definitely worth a trip.
