Fish & Chips by the seaside is pure joy. Join us on the culinary quest to find the best Fish and Chips in Porthcawl. The seaside town on the South Wales coast where we call home. Although we say ‘best’, like choosing your favourite child, choosing a favourite chips shop is not easy.
As a seaside town, Porthcawl has its fair share of ‘proper’ chip shops. As a result of this, the general standard is quite high. Like football teams, each of these chippies has its own loyal following. There’s nothing like a bag of chips to get the passions flowing.
For our tour of the Porthcawl chip shops, there were some basic but important criteria:
They have to be a dedicated chip shop, no burger bars or kebab shops etc.
They have to be open all year round, with no seasonal chip shops.
Also, we ordered the same food in all the chip shops, a regular cod and chips. Although being Welsh, we do like a bit of sauce to dip our chips in and our sauce of choice is Irish curry sauce.
It is important to eat fish and chips outside to get the genuine seaside ‘chip’ experience. Fighting off the swooping seagulls and sitting in the wind and rain. We actually braved the snow during our trip to Beales!

So if you are visiting the UK and have never tried ‘proper‘ Fish and Chip, definitely try some during your trip. You have to have them by the seaside with plenty of salt and vinegar to get the true experience.
One aspect which you can only fully experience in person is the wonderful smell of the fresh fish and chips. It is an incredible smell that is guaranteed to make your mouth water uncontrollable. Any resistance is futile.
