If you are looking for a new way to travel then why not consider going on a road trip? If you’ve never been on a road trip before then you might find that you may actually quite enjoy it, despite being something that you’ve probably never considered. As we’ve done a number of road trips ourselves, we’ve put together this guide to offer some useful road trip tips for novices.
Consider Where You Want to Go
It may seem obvious but when you are planning a road trip, the first thing that you’ll need to do is consider where you ‘ALL’ want to go. This could be somewhere closer to home within the UK or venturing further afield such as Europe or the US. There are many classic drives around the world that are also worth considering for your first road trip. At the moment, it might be nice to plan the classic road trip such as Route 66 but due to the current world situation, you might find this tricky. Understandably with all the restrictions, it’s worth waiting until the UK government advises that travel can go ahead as well as in the country that you plan to travel to. When it is safe to go, be sure to check you have travel insurance which will be essential for your trip.
Get Your Travel Party Organised
Due to the current situation, there are aspects of road trips which previously didn’t need such in-depth consideration. Once you’ve decided where you are want to go then you will need to take all the appropriate health precautions into consideration and abide by government rules which can change weekly. Make sure that everyone is fit enough to travel but don’t book anything until you know that it is safe to do so. We are planning a few trips later in the year but with the continued uncertainty we are leaving the actually booking until last minute.
Make Sure You Have the Essentials
On a long road trip, especially in places like Australia and the US you might only pass shops that sell food a couple of times so to avoid getting hungry, you should stock up on some snacks to eat and drinks to keep you hydrated. You will also need to consider bringing some maps and torches along with portable chargers while you are on the road, don’t just rely on your phone. First aid kits are also important to bring on road trips so make sure you pack one with all the essentials in case of an emergency. Depending on the rules and regulations in line with COVID-19, you might still need to pack some extra masks and hand sanitiser to be safe.
Don’t Forget the Entertainment
If you are going on a long road trip, it might be useful to bring some forms of entertainment so that you don’t get bored. From listening to music to watching movies on your phone to reading books or bringing some games for your pit stops. Make sure to choose something that all passengers will enjoy, this can be quite tricky especially if you have a range of ages and tastes although, without any doubt, K-pop should definitely be banned from the car.

It is a lot easier than you may think to plan a road trip as long as you have a route to follow and point you in the right direction.
